"Godfather” of AI, Warns May Surpass Human Capabilities

‍Geoffrey Hinton, the "Godfather of AI," explores the fascinating parallels between artificial and biological intelligence. This lecture delves into neural networks, comparing their learning processes to biological brains. Hinton examines how AI learns from biological intelligence and its potential to surpass human capabilities.

‍Hinton’s warning:

‍• I reserve "existential" for threats that could wipe out humanity.

‍• This possibility is not science fiction.

‍• This could happen in several different ways if Al gets to be much smarter than us.

‍Hinton suggests the following defence against claims that mankind will not be wiped out because AI lacks sentience:

‍• People have a strong tendency to think they are special.

‍• People used to think that they were made by a god who looked just like them so he obviously put them at the centre of the universe.

‍• Many people still think we have something special, sentience, that computers cannot have.

‍• People think that AI’s lack of sentience, which he describes as subjective experience, will prevent computers from ever having real understanding.

‍• AI can in fact develop subjective experience, that is, sentience.
