Hinton suggests the following defence against claims that mankind will not be wiped out because AI lacks sentience:
• People have a strong tendency to think they are special.
• People used to think that they were made by a god who looked just like them so he obviously put them at the centre of the universe.
• Many people still think we have something special, sentience, that computers cannot have.
• People think that AI’s lack of sentience, which he describes as subjective experience, will prevent computers from ever having real understanding.
• AI can in fact develop subjective experience, that is, sentience.
